HOW TO PREVENT DRAUGHTS.

TO THE EDITOB. Sis,—Your correspondent "Snow,” in last night’s issue of your paper, wishes to.be informed of a plan to prevent a draught frbm passing under the doors of a room in cold weather. I can describe a simple and ingtsdoro contrivance which my father used‘N and found successful for the purpose! ' ftwjH* narrow bag made of green bane, abew two

inches or a little more in width, its length being the, width of the door, and it was nl ea width sand, and a lath inserted from end to end The bag was then placed so as re " °” the door when the door Vas shut, the upper part being ticked to the door along the edge, which would, be abut two inches above the floor. Then a piece of small cord was fastened to the lath m the centre and passed through a small pulley screwed into the door immediately above it, the other end of the cord being stretched from the pulley para'lel with the bag and fastened to the doorpost furthest from the handles, 'ihe bag must be fixed bn the side on which the hinges separate, and then it will be found that the act of opening the door will draw the cord and lift the bag off the floor until it is shut again, thus obviating any hindrance to the free movement of the door on its hinges. If the bag is placed on the other side of the door the cord must be taken from the pulley by a hole through the door to it, Perhaps if a larger piece of wood, filling the bag, wore substituted for the lath, sand might not be required.—l am, etc., Comport. Dunedin, March 30. TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Draughts may be prevented by tacking four or five thicknesses of cloth or baize about IJin wide to the lower portion of doors, so as to press gently on the side or floor. There can be no objection raised to the exclusive use of colonial coal for all purposes. Our looil lignite is a most economical fuel, and the supply is not confined to Walton Park and Kaitangata only, as “ Snow ” would imply. There are, in addition to thoSe referred to, the Abbotsford, Green Island; and Fern hill collieries —the two former Ones phoducb coal equal, if not superior; to Walton Park, and it is sold at a less price. The Kaitangata mine claims the palm for the best lignite, but it is sold for about double the price of the ordinary brown coal. —I am, etc., WINTER. Dunedin, March 30.
