MUNICIPAL.
North • hast Valley. The ordinary meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr White) and all the councillors.—The Finance Committee reported that they had passed accounts amouuting to L4B 3s Bd. They also recommended the payment of certain other accounts amounting to LlOl 8s Id, The Committee recommended that the Colonial Treasurer’s circular re local loan business should be referred to the Council. The Committee had instructed the collector to take legal proceedings against all ratepayers in arrears of rates. The amount paid into the bank had been Lll4 Os 9d. Adopted.—The Works Committee reported that they had considered the inspector’s report, and recommended that his report should be adopted. This was agreed to, with the exception of a clause ordering the re-formation of Carlton terrace. They further reported that the inspector had been given instructions to continue the present formation on Thomson and Chipp’s road at cost of L 5. The inspector had also been ordered to remove the Council’s night-cart on to the Council’s ground, and to have it repaired. They recommended that applications be invited from persons willing to remove night-soil within the Borough. They also recommended that the balance of the money unexpended out of the allocation of Sunnydalc Extension bo spent in widening the top of George street. The remainder of the report was adopted —Upon the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Green, it was unanimously resolved “That this Council record on their minutes the deep regret they feel at the untimely death of tins late Hon. James Macandrew, one of Otago’s best statesmen, and that a letter of condolence be sent to the Hon. James Macandrew’s family expressing the Council’s deep sympathy with them.”—James Mitchell wrote stating that as soon as the drain in Duncan street, Ferguslie, was cleared out he would have the pipes laid down as requested by the Council. After a long and somewhat',bitter discussion, during which there were three amendments moved upon the original motion, it was resolved that the Mayor and Cr Green should represent the Council at the forthcoming Charitable Aid Conference.—The secretary of the Charitable Aid Board wrote forwarding the names of nine persons residing within the Borough who were in receipt of relief from the Benevolent Institution, Cr Duncan moved—“ That a special committee be appointed consisting of the Mayor, Crs Rusworth, Black, and the mover, to look into the matter of culverts on the Main Road so as to prevent the recurrence of litigation in the event of the lower main road being flooded during heavy rains.” After a long discussion the motion was carried by the casting-vote of the Mayor,—lt was resolved to allow the North-East Valley Branch of the Church of Christ to have the use of the Council Chamber on Sundayj mornings and afternoons, without gas, for Lls per annum.—lt was agreed that the debentures under the Roads and Bridges Act should be converted under the provisions of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act. St. Hilda.—This Council met last evening, when there were present Crs Stenhouso (in the chair), Gore, Bellett, Allen, and Daly.—Mr James Muirhead wrote complaining about the cattle nuisance, one of his children having been rushed by a cow. Referred to the ranger and inspector.—Mr Ussher, C.E., Wrote in reference to the cost of the Anderson Bay road widening, and declining to reconsider his former decision on the matter. Referred to the Mayor.— The inspector was instructed to prepare a stand for the cabs on the east side of the main road, opposite the St, Hilda Hotel.—lt was resolved that the town clerk give notice to the cab-drivers resident in the Borough that they will be required to pay their licenses in future to this Council. Itwas also resolved to call for tenders for making culverts in Larkworthy, Chapman, Moreau, and Do Carle streets.—The inspector reported that he had examined Mr Docherty’s premises and found them thoroughly clean. Mrs Doyle has put the cow complained of into a paddock. He could not proceed with the footpath and stone drain at Mr Simons’s, as no arrangements have been made about quarrying stone. About three chains of Burnside’s footpath remains to be completed. Received.
