THE VOLUNTEER REVIEW.

■ * (From Om Own Correspondent.) WAIHOLA, March 23. The whole force was under the command of Lieutenant-colonel Wales, with Surgeon Coughtrey as aide-de-camp. The morning was devoted to skirmishing and outpost duty. The attacking force, consisting of tho country corps, were supposed to meet the town corps, the former forming up in ambush and opening fire, with the result that the defending force would retire under fire to the review ground, where the men were posted as * sentries fer outpost duty. This part of the programme, however, proved a complete fiasco, owing to tho fact that the attacking force, probably through a misunderstanding, never came within firing distance of the town companies. The Hussars were apportioned to both forces as scouts. In the afternoon the march past was taken, and some very creditable marching was shown. The following was the parade state : Ordnance Battalion. Staff —Commandant Goldie, Sergeant-major M'Kay. Dunedin Navals 30, Peninsula Navals 45, B Bit'oy 38, Enginee b 48,' Ordnance Band 18-total, 179 men and three guns No. 1 Battalion Staff.—Majors C I an and Gordon, Sorgeant-mij.ir Hanison. . ~ ~ Hindquarters Band 40, City Guards 31, North Dunedin 34, Wakari SI, South Dunedin 34, Highland 25, Cavershnm 31, Irish 17, Peninsula 9—total, 261. No. 2 Battalion. Staff.—Major Andrew and Serge int-raajor Fowler. South District Rifles -79. Bruco 19, East Taieri 23, Clutha 35, Waituhuna 13, Tuapeka 23. Kaitangata 6, West Taieri 15-total, 170. Colonel Wales told the men that the sham fight had not been up to the mark, nor were his expectations realised. The force was then dismissed for an hour.
