DISUNION IN THE AUCKLAND VOLUNTEER FORCE.
[Special to the Star.] AUCKLAND, March 15. It is somewhat curious that coincident with Auckland’s marked victory at the nnnnal rifle meeting of the Colony there seems a general movement here in the direction of breaking up Volunteer companies. The Ponsouby and Colleco Rifles have been disbanded; the Veteran C >rps is in a state of collapse, a number of members having handed in arms, etc. ; and now the Devonport Navals appear about to follow suit. At a meeting of the latter corps last night, Captain Fenton presiding, explanations were demanded as to the case of straw hats for theorps ordered through Fenton and Co., which had got into the hands of the Oflicial Assignee in Bankruptcy, who refused to give them unless paid a trade profit on them. The auditors reported that they could not pass the balance-sheet as correct, as they had nothing to show why certain money had been paid to A. E. Fenton; also because there were discrepancies in the ammunition account, and in company’s ball account. They requested that all papers dealing with these matters should be laid before them. Captain Fenton spoke in explanation of the matter in dispute, and pointed out that L 96 paid to A. E. Fenton and Co. was on account of tho company’s uniform. Lieutenant Dacre, in the course of the meeting, handed in his resignation, but was asked to reconsider it. Ultimately, the meeting adjourned without any resolution being arrived at.
