A gentleman who was a passenger by the Waihora informs the ‘ News ’ that Major George’s horse was to go over this week from Melbourne to Sydney to fulfil his engagements at the autumn meeting. Nelson is regarded as an unlikely starter for the Sydney Cup, as he is carrying top weight, and 121b"more than Trident. The gallant New Zealander will, however, take part in several weight-for-age events. It is stated that Beach, who has relatives in the Lakes district, is likely to be present at the Riverton regatta, which comes off on Easter Monday, and will afterwards make a tour of the Colony. The main feature of the regatta is a sculling race of LIOO, for which Heame and White intend to compete. Arrangements are being made in several parts of the district for boiling down sheep, a thousand culls having been recently bought for this purpose, at 9d per head. Petitions praying the Government to stop the importation of apples and pears from Australia were recently signed here. In a few days signatures were obtained representing 247 fruit growers, and this without canvassing land-owners. Infected fruit is still frequently seized by the Customs authorities at the Bluff. On the recommendation of the surgeon, the Hospital Trustees have decided to unite with the North Canterbury Trustees with a view of providing for the exclusion of delirium tremens cases from hospital treatment. It has been stated that Brown, the rider of Nelson in the Australian Cup, lost the race through dropping his whip at a critical moment, and that he was nervous at being in company with such a formidable antagonist as Hales ; but a gentleman who returned from Melbourne by the Waihora informs the ‘News’ that there was not the slightest foundation for the latter part of the statement. Brown was jammed against the fence, and to ease himself ho tried to pass his whip from one hand to the other, when it fell.
