THE GOVERNMENT INSURANCE ASSOCIATION.

to the editor. Sir, —Referring to the rumored appointment of Mr Driver as Government Insurance agent at a salary of LI,OOO per annum, together with a commission upon the business done, permit me to point out that it is not very long since we had experience of a similar case—viz., that of Mr Thorne. He was appointed, I understand, at a salary of L6OO, with a commission on precisely the same terms, when a short time after it was reported he was really earning between L 2,600 and L 3,000 a-year, being upwards of L 2,000 more than his salary. I have a very great respect for Mr Driver, but experience teaches us that it is very injudicious to make appointments in this way.—l am, etc., Charles R. Chapman. Dunedin, January 21.
