CRICKET.
TO THE EDITOR, Sie,—Would you be good enough to give your opinion on the following question:— At the commencement of the cricketing season a certain club offered trophies for the beat batting and bowling averages in the first, second, and third elevens; also for the best fielding. On occasional holidays the club play matches, not necessarily with bona fide clubs, but anyone, if suitable, such as banks, companies, etc. As a result of some members of the team preferring to spend their holidays otherwise than at cricket, and not being expected to play only in list matches, the club consequently have to put mixed elevens in the field. Should the result of such a match count in making up the averages for the trophies ?—I am, etc., Long Slip. Dunedin, November 29. [lt will depend altogether on the terms on which the prizes were offered. If given for the best averages, irrespective of conditions, we should say that all matches arranged by the club’s match Committee will count; frequently it is stipulated that the averages shall only count for inter-club matches. — Ed.
