SPORTING NOTES.

Captain Russell', of Napier has purchased the two-year-old filly f jictua Green from the New Zealand Stud Company- ( The yearlings about to be sent to bydney by the Auckland Stud Company are thirteen in number, viz. :-A colt by Musket--I>er-gere, colt by Musket-Onyx, cnlt by Muskst —Locket, celt by Musket—Lyra, colt by Muskoc-Retaliation, filly by Musket-bar-tash, filly by Musket -Sister Agnes, fally by Cadogan-Titania, colt by Cadogan—Naiad, colt by Capapie—Eden, colt by Leolinua— Petroleuse, filly by Musket-Kangi, filly by Musket—Erieyna. It was also intended co send the yearling sister of Martini-Henry to Sydney, but the directors have deemed to days' walk at Auckland for LIOO a-side, between Edwards and Arthur &nd James Hendry and Huckstep, terminated *t eleven o'clock on Saturday night. Huckstep, the third competitor, com-

pleted his second term, and finally retired at 9.15 with sore feet, his record being 161 mileß 12 laps. Edwards's score at the close of the match was 471 milca 19 laps, and the combined scoro 402 miles 11 laps, Edwards thus winning by 9 miles 8 laps. The Theatre Royal was crowded to suffocation, Three cheers were enthusiastically given for Edwards, who did not appear much at the finish of the match. CRICKET. 'IV- 'Argus ' is -cry with the oompi-u-Jon of the Australian Eleven. It ga y S :_«• The eleven are decidedly weak. To nine of the names no exception can be taken, but Alexander is certainly below the standard, while Cooper will only be of value as a bowler for occasional use. There can be no doubt that the strongest possible eleven would have a hard fight to maintain the ground which previous teams have gained. It was desirable, therefore, that the best possible team should be got together, instead of which there will be several weak points in the organisation. The eleven, to begin with, will not represent the true strength of Australian cricket, and with only one emergency man instead of two, the team arc sure to be overworked, with the result that important matches that might bo won will perhaps be lost. We trust that for the future cricketers will take the matter into their own hands, and see that any team which may visit England are thoroughly representative of Australian cricket. What we would suggest is that the Cricket Associations of the various colonies should undertake the selection and management of the Australian teams. In this way we should make sure that the best players were chosen, aud that the affairs of Australian elevens were administered so as to promote Australian cricket, rather than the interests of Australian cricketers." The match between Sargood's Eleven and the Taieri Fifteen for the Junior Cup was concluded on the Oval on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in rather an easy win for Sargood's. The batting of Peake, Martin, and Hadfield is worthy of mention; and Kitt and Millar's bowling was very good. The Taieri were unfortunate in having to bat with only eleven men each innings. The following are the full scores :
