' . ~ .- Mr Montagu Tym reports having offered at auction to-day the following Queensland sugars ex Hugh Ewing, There was a large attendance of the trade, and considerable interest in the sale was manifested. Three-fourths of the cargo was disposed of at the following prices:—Bright yellow crystals, L2B and L2B 10s per ton; counters, L 24 10s to L 25 6s; finest grey crystals, L2B and L2B ss; brewers' crystals, L2B 15s; best counters, L 27 15s to L 29 ss; finest white, L2812s 6d to L3l. CROWN LANDS SALE. Mr R. B. Martin held a sale of Crown lands at the Dunedin office at noon to-day. The following lots, among others, were sold : Tiger Hill District.—Sections ,22 and 82, bloclr 2, containing respectively 155 a Sr 5p and 81a Or Bp. Upset price, 21s per acre: Sold at 32b to William Leask. . Tapanui.—Section S4, block" 2, 'con'almnjr 2a 30p: Sold at upset price (L 5 per acre) to William Siramonds. Section 5, block 23, containing la 3r lOp, to V. Pyke at upset (L 5 per acre). Section 3, block 27, containing 3i, to Connell and Moodie, as agents, at L 5 per aero. The who'e of the subdivisions of Run No. 244 were sold to A. C. Begg, at the upset price in each instance. STOCK AND STATION REPORT. Mr Donald Stronaoh (on bohalf of the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agccoy Company, Limit d) reports for the week ending December 19 as follows : Fat Cattle.—For the week's supply 156 head were yarded, consisting chiefly of good with a few pens 'extra weight and quality. For medium to good prices were about tho same aa last week, but for prime quality an advance was obtained. Best bullocks brought Llolsa to Ll4, and cows HO 108 to Ll2. We sold on account of Mr Alexander Thomson, Kakanui, SO bullocks at from L 9 15s to LlO 15s; Mr M'Lean, Allday Bay, and others, 4 bullocks at L 9 to L 9 ss, 8 cows at L 7 12s 6d to Ll2; and quote prime beef 25s to 27s 6d, medium 22s 6d per 1001b. Fat Calves.—4l were penned, of which we sold 11 at from 10s to 24s each. Fat Sheep.—A moderate number came <o hand—--I,7lo—consisting of 2SO shorn merinoes, 100 do in the wool, 458 cross-breds in the wo.l, and tbe balance shorn. The trade bought freely, and prices showed a slight improvement on last week's. "Best cross-breds, shorn, brought 17s 6d to 203 3d ; others, 13s to 15s6d; do, in the wool, from 16s to 18s 3d ; merinoes, shorn, 8s to lis; in the wool, 16s 9d. Wo sold, on account Messrs Millington Bros., Papakaio, 66 cross-breds, shorn, at 14s to 15s; Mr William Dennison, Pukeuri, 30 cross-bred do, at 13s 9d to 18s; and others, 40 shorn merinoes at Bs. Wo quote mutton, shorn, fcd to 3Jd per lb Fat Lambs.—sß3 were penned. Competition was brisk, and all sold at an advance on last week's rates, fetching from 9s 6d to 15s. We sold on account of Mr William Dennison, Pukeuri, 22 at lis Gd ; Mr Watson, Pukeuri, and others, 78 at 10s to 10s 3d. Fat Pigs.—l 23 were penned, and, under spirited competition, all were disposed of at from 14s to 63s each. Store Cattle.—Well-grown bullocks in forward condition arc saleable, but inferior stores are not in much demand. Quotations are without material change. Store Sheep.—lnquiries are being freely made for voung merinoes and cross-breds of t>oth sexes, and we are in negotiation for the sale of three or four large Wool.—Deliveries into store have been on a more extensive scale during the last few days, and we have decided to bold our opening sale, as advertised, on next Friday, when we will offer some superior wools I in grease and scoured. , , Sheepskins.—We offered a large catalogue at our weekly sale on Monday last; nearly all station and country skins. The usual aumber of buyers was in attendance, and competed spiritedly for merinoes, but for cross-breds competition was dull and prices lower , fetching from Is 7d to 4s; merinoes, Is lid to 6s 8d green pelts, 5d to 6d ; lambskins, 8d to lid. Babbit-skins.—We report a fair demand, but owing to tho supply of prime winter skins hieing all but exhausted, business is scarcely so brisk as a week or two ago. This, however, has no effect on prices lately ruling, which may be now quoted the same as last week, viz., stout bright milling. Is 94d to Is lOd; short bright feed, Is 9d; medium, Is 7d to Is 8d; musty and discolored, Is 3d to Is 6d. We cleared oat all in store at above quotations.—Barley: We have no sales to report.

RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS. The following are the detailed returns of the traffic on the Bluff-Hurunui section for the four weeks ended November 10 :

A novel feature introduced in the last return gazetted of the New Zealand railway traffio (says tho 'Post') is a statement of the actual nature and amoiint of the traffio Itself during the portion of tho financial year so far expired—viz., thirty-two weeks. The passengers conveyed during that period mini' bered 1,827,845, an increase of 6,494 over last year. The parcels, dogs, etc, showed an increase of 9,276. Cattle, sheep, ete., exhibited an Increase of 103,856, equal to 40 per cent, above last year. Th« goods conveyed amounted to 1,072,925 tons, an increase of about 11 per cent. The quantity of grain carried waa greater by 70 per cent, than last year.
