FOOTBALL.
The first fifteen of the Oamaru Football Club played a match on the old cricket ground yesterday with the Montecillo Club. The visiting team arrived by the express, and play commenced shortly after one o'clock. The game was played in four spells of twenty minutes each, and throughout the mateh the Montecillo men had it pretty well their own way, although they failed to score a goal. They worked well together, and the play of the back players was very good ; some capital passing back being done during the game. The Oamaru forwards played very well and carried the ball through most of the scrimmages; but, the ball once through and in the possession of the Montecillo men, the latter showed thomselves the stronger team. The first spell resulted in a touch-down for the Montecillo Club, which Ballantyne, however, failed to convert into a goal. In the second spell Leith scored another touch-down for the same club ; the try was entrusted to Fox, who failed to score a goal. The third spell was the best and most evenly contested of the game, neither Bide gaining an advantage. In the fourth spell another touch-down was gained by the Montecillo men, the ball being taken behind the Oamaru goal without opposition in consequence of an apparent misunderstanding on the part of the local team. Time was soon after called, the match thus resulting in a win for the visiting team by three tries to nil. —'North Otago Times.'
A football match between the Dunedin Pirates Football Club and the second fifteen of the Oamaru Club was played on the old cricket ground yesterday, and after a very enjoyable game resulted in a victory for the former by two goals and a try to nil. The weather was all that could be desired, and there were a large number of spectators present. Farquhar for the visitors set the ball in motion, and the leather was kept well in the Oamaru twenty-five, and Taiaroa obtained a touch-down, which was converted into a goal by Farquhar. No further score was obtained either in the first or second spell, although the visitors had several marks in front of the Oamaru goal. In the third spell, Taiaroa for the Pirates by a good run scored another touch-down, which resulted in a goal. Fraser also obtained a touch-down during this spell, but the try was a failure. During the fourth spell the Oamaru men pulled themselves together, and for some time kept the Pirates working hard, but their goal was relieved by Burrows, who looked like scoring until collared by Bannerman. Time was called shortly afterwards, the game ending as above. For the victors Messrs Taiaroa, Burrows, Fraser, H. and W. Stronach, and Halliwell played a good game ; while for the losers Messrs H. Moore, T. Hewat, Ham, Todd, Ferens, Hardy, and Bee worked hard to avert defeat. The Pirates played well together, and their passing kick was excellent; while the Oamaru team had the best of the scrimmages. Moore played the best game for the Oamaru team, his collaring being especially good ; while H. Stronach for the visitors played a splendid game behind the scrimmages.—lbid.
