THE HARBOR BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Harbor Board, held this afternoon, was attended by Messrs K. Ramsay (chairman), R. Wilson, A. H Ross, A. Burt, R. Paterson, J. Mill, and H. Guthrie. CORRESPONDENCE. The Caversham town clerk requested the Board to remove a nuisance on their property on the reclaimed ground. The secretary mentioned that the Board could not get a title from the Government. Mr W, H. Hannay, traffic manager, wrote stating that he had recommended the Board's application to have the Jetty street wharf connected with the goods station. The secretary to the Board forwarded the Auckland Harbor Board Empowering Act, 1882. It was stated that the Bill had been left in charge of Mr Fish. Captain Abstin handed in his resignation as master of the Balclutha, having accepted an appointment as mate of one of the Westport Colliery Company's steamers. The resignation was accepted, and Wilson, one of the Balclutha's hands,' temporarily appointed master. HARBQR DUES. The secretary to the Ghamber of Commerce submitted a scale of dues proposed by the Committee of that body, and asked for an interview with the Board tp-morrow to come to a settlement on the matter. Mr Burt and Mr Paterson were of opinion that if the scale proposed were adopted a deal of extra labor would be imposed, Mr Wilson ; The drapers get off scot free almost. The Chairman said that the second resolution meant an immense amount of labor being entailed on the importers as well as on the Board. The worst feature of the proposal so far as he could see was that the Board would require to trust to any returns the importers might choose to send in. Mr Paterson thought that if a charge were made the Board should advert to the system of making the ships pay the dues, and put them on the bills of lading. Messrs Paterson, Burt, Ross, Fish, and the chairman were appointed to meet the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. The Chairman said that there was no chance of ad valorem now so far as the Chamber of Commerce was concerned, although there was nothing to prevent the Board taking independent action in the matter. THE DREDGE. In reply to a remark by Mr Mill, T>e Chairman took the opportunity of denying the statement which had been made that the new dredge had been injured by being strained in Victoria Channel. In consequence of that- statement the Engineer, the members of Works! Committee, Mr |

Ross, and the Inspector of Machinery hail gone clown and inspected the dredge and had found that she had not sustained the slightest injury. There was a certificate from Mr Baird to that effect. He regretted that correspondence should appear in the Press, entirely contrary to facts, without inquiries being instituted. WORKS COMMITTEE. On the m '.ion of Mr Burt the name of Mr Ross was added to the Works Committee.
