The arrivals to date for the auctions amonnt to 100,000 bales. The total probable quantity to be offered will be 300.C00 bales. February 4. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,490,000 quarters. , Australian tallow—Beßt beef, 34s 6d; beat mutton, 39«. Four and a-balf per cent. New Zealand loan to-day is quoted at ex dlv. The 4 Daily News' to-day publishes a telegram stating that the Ashafitees threaten to make war against'the settlers and native* in the British Colony of Siesra Leone, on the West Coast of Africa. Telegrams further state that 1b consequence of the attitude of the Asbaratees a detachment of the Ist West Indian Regimsnt stationed at Freetown has been ordered to proosed to the border to oppose *ny attaok. Miohael Davitt, who hsfc recently returned from America, where he had established branches of the Land League, haSrJseen arrested in Ireland for sedition. February 5.
It has been decided by the authorities that Michael Davitt, the League agitator, who was arrested yesterday, shall complete the term of penal servitude to which he waa sentenced some time ago.
The following appear In the ' Argus' » LONDON, January 27. During the past few days the polioe at Chelsea and Windsor have reoeived secret, and apparently trustworthy, information that the Fenians were maturing plans for outrages at those two places. The constabulary therefore have bsen increased and other precautions are being taken by the authorities. The Boer leaders have made overtures to several prominent 2ulu chiefs to join them j but none as yet have shown any symptoms of disaffection, and every precaution is being taken to prevent a rising in Zululand. Several shocks of earthquake have again been felt at Agram, tie capital of Croatian Austria.
Numerous meetings are being held through* out the United States for the purpose of expressing sympathy with the Irish Land League. The meetings are attended for the most part by the Irish section of the population. Not much importance la attached to the movement.
It has been decided to introduce a ofamae In the Irish Coercion Bill making it retro* ipeotive in its operation. This will triable the Government to arrest and imprison persons guilty of crimes committed prior to the passing of the Act. The death is anaonnoed of Lieutenant' colonel Lyafcer, of the Bengal Infantry, who for distinguished services in the field during the Indian mutiny received the decoration of the Victoria Cross in 1858.

To-day is observed as a general holiday in coniequenoe of the laying of the first stone of the Harbor works. The town Is gaily decorated with flags eto. The stone was laid by Mr F, A. Camngton at 3 p.m.
WELLINGTON, February 7.
The police received a telegram last night stating that the stabling at the Marquis, of Normanby Hotel, Carterton, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night, and th»fr"an attempt had been made to fire the hotel, Tho stable and coach-houae were insured for L3OO. One house was burnt. The hoteF and public hall were saved with diffioufty.

INVERCARGILL, February 7.
A oottage owned by Mr Raid, a lettercarrier, was burned down this morning. It was insured for LIOO, and the furniture for LSO. The cause of the fire ia unknown.
