CRICKET.

At a meeting of the Otago Association Committee last evening, Mr Eva in the chair, a telegraphic communication was read from Mr Whitakcr, of Auckland, inviting an Otago team to visit that city during the current season, and promising, if that were done, that an Auckland team would be sent to ! go , next year - Ifc waa intimated that a reply had been sent, regretting the impossibility of complying with the request. A letter was also read from Mr M. God by, inviting the Otago team to play a match at Timaru <in rout* for Christchurch, to which the secretary was directed to reply regretting that time would not allow of this being done. Messrs Fulton, Spring, and Rose, were appointed delegates from the association to confer with the Canterbury Association re future dates of the Interprovincial matches. A strong opinion was expres ed that it was not advisable to entertain at present the idea of two matches during the year. It is, however, probable that a Christchurch team will visit JDunedin at the end of this month.

The Selection Committee of the Otago Cricket Association have chosen the following to represent Otago in the Interprovincial Matoh at Hagley Park, Chrißtchurch, on Monday next and following days : P. Fulton (captain), Clark, Crawshaw, Haskell,' Glen, Spring, Austin, Paramor, M'Neil, Veiaon, and Douglas. Mr 11. Hose accompanies them as umpire. The men proceed North by train on Thursday. The Canterbury players have gone in for daily practice. The team will be chosen from Ashby, Beard, Corfe, Fuller, E. Fowler, J. Fowler, W. Frith, M. Godby, R. Harman, W. Hartland, W. E. Leach, H. Loughnan, H. W. Moore, Neilson, Ollivier, Secvetan, Skelton, Stevens, G. A. Turner, Watson, Wilson, and Wood. " Our own " thinks the Eleven will be Neilson (captain),. Ashby, Corfe, Fowler, Godby, Frith, Leach, Moore, Ollivier, J. Fowler, Watson, and Beard, or Hartland.

Some dissatisfaction existed at Coates, a left-handed man, being substituted for Powell in Spofforth's place, and at the omission of Gregory in the recent match at Sydney against the Englishmen. Coates, however, strengthened the bowling. C. Bannerman played a ball on to his pad, and then it touched the wicket—so he retired without scoring. In the second innings he got his hand split between the fourth and fifth fingers in stopping magnificently at mid-wicket a desperately hard-hit ball. Tindall, (Jarratt, and Allen were all more or less crippled, and Evans was suffering from a oold. The Colonials' prospects were therefore weak. The match was concluded on January 28, in the presence of 5,000 persons. Thero was the greatest excitement towards tho close of the innings. The Wales eleven at the commencement of their second innings had 226 to get to win. Maaaie played a grand innings of 78, carrying his bat. He showed magnificent defence and great hitting power. His score included eight fours. Chas. Bannerman, who was suffering from an injury to his right hand received while fielding, had two of his fingers bound up, and played a fine not-oiit innings of 60. He made five 4'b, three of them being successive hits, and one bill he hit to the pavilion enclosure for 5. ■' At the conclusion of the #aine Lord Harris, Murdoch, Massie, and Bitnnerman were called for, and loudly cheered, and L 36 was collected on the ground for Bannerman. The complete scores were :—.
