FIRE AT CAVERSHAM.
AtwMtorey brick store, situated on the main road at taversham, and in the occupation of Mr Peter .liutherlord, grocer, was destroyed by lire on Saturday uignt. John Blair, shopman, was employed lu the storeroom adjoining the shop weighing flour and putting it into bags, when he upset a lighted keroscae lamp which had been standing on a kerosene tin. and it burst. In a few moments the Store (which cont.l-.ed sc vsral tins of kerosene and a quantity of spirits) was in names, and the Are spread to the mam portion of the building so rapidly that Mr Rutherford had barely time to rescue his family, who were in the upper part of the building, and was not able to save his books, which were in the safe. The Dunedin and Mornmgton brigades were promptly on the spot, but pwmg to the supply of water not yet being carried mtocaversham their services could not be utilised, ihe building, with its contents, was completely destroyed. He estimates ms loss at LI.OUO over and above the sum covered by ”?® u JIP ce - T h* B raises the question of the desirability of the town brigade going to the suburbs, where, owing to a water supply not being available, their services are practically useless. On Saturday t T h ® men with the whole of the Dunedin and North Dunedin gear were at Cavcrsham, and had a nre broken out m town the results would probably hato been senous before the firemen could have rcthrow out the hint for the consideration of the City Corporation.
