CITY POLICE COURT.

Vagrancy. —Joseph Johnston was charged with having no visible lawful means of support.—Oswald M'Pherson, station-master, deposed that about a fortnight ago accused waited on him with a subscription list. Witness gave him 2s 6d, but subsequently found that he di ink the money.—John M ‘Lean stated that he had assisted accused, but believed he had drunk the money. Witness thought it hj s duty to mention the matter to the police. Edward Frown, propuetor of the Commercal Hotel at Green Island, said accused stopped at his house for a few days, paying for his bed and having an occasional pint of beer, for which he paid also.—Charles Samson, Mayor of Green Island, said accused had solicited alms of him, but witness declined to assist him as he was under the influence of drink VV Loess had seen accused playing at billiards at the • ommercial Hotel. —Accused said Le was without means, and unable to work through his leg being weak Friends had occasionally ‘‘shouted” drinks for him. His Worship said accused could not be allowed to go about soliciting alms and then spending the money given him in drinking and billi rd playing. He would be sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor. An Old Offender. Annie MTherson was charged w th having no visible lawful means of support. Previous conv ctions were proved against accused, and she was sentenced to three months’ hard labor.

Drunkenness.— Mary Ann Brcnchley, charged with this offence, wasco victed and discharged. Martin Bremner, Peter Morgan, and Ellen Adams were fined 5s respectively or twenty-four hours’ hard Lbor.
