The cost of the important item of meat in Oamaru is npw reduced to almost a nominal figure—a whole sheep being purchasable for six shillings, fore-quarters for one shilling, and hind-quarters for two shillings each. The contract for the formation of the branch line from the Great Southern Railway to the Waimate township will be finished in about three days, and will be opened for traffic next week. The trunk line will be opened as far as Oamaru in September.
Of the sufferers by the railway accident at Waireka, the ‘N. 0. Times’ reports that Kennedy was steadily improving, and at a quarter to twelve o’clock last night Orr was wonderfully better, conversing quite cheerfully, aud evep jokingly.. Scarlet , fevgr has made its appearance in Lawrence. ’ We have heard of one case. The railway bridge at the Woolshed is so far advanced that, the rails , have been laid across it, arid the permanent way is close to Mr Murray’s property, it is said that the supply of : rails is very shorthand that the contractors’ work is likely to be delayed from that cause.
