A good start was effected—the Don going off with the load, all the rest close together. After going half-a-mile Ariel fell. The jockey was not hurt. Don kept the lead past the grand stand, the others all close together. Isaac Walton repeated his bolt. The other horses went on in close order. On the far side Bedouin suddenly fell away, and the Don went on still leading by a trifle, with Perfume a- d Parawhenua in' close attendance. As they rounded the turn the Don cameaway with a rush. The Don and Parawhenua raced up the straight, and the latter won by two lengths, the Don second, Bedouin third, all whipping hard. Champagne Stakes, 50 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs. Distance,. 6 furlongs. Major Walmsley’a Aerolite, by Derby—Cynthia 1 Mr Watt's colt, by Totora—Ladybird ... 2 Mi- Gee’s Lady Vavasour, by Totara—Molly Bawn 3 Mr Back land’s Aconite, by Derby Occult * *!! 0
Betting : Even on Totara colt. The lot were despatched to an excellent start. To the sijrprise of every one, the favorite fell behind from the first and lost so much ground in the first quarter of a mile that he was really out of the race. Meanwhile Aerolite and Aconite went on with the lead close together. Onrounding the turn Major Walmsley’s horse came away from his and entered the straight With a lead of two lengths, which he increased up the straight, and won hard held, amid loud cheers, by four lengths. Mr Watt’s colt made up a lot of his lost ground in the last 200 yards, and finished second. Handicap Hurdle Race of 40 sovs 1 , with a sweep-*-stake of 8 sovs. Distance, two miles, over eight hardies, Mr M'Gce’s May Moon, Ost 111b . Waitara and Gladstone led, with the others widely spread. Past the stand Gladstone and Black Monitor were racing for the lead, May Moon and Mystery next; and Waitara, who had missed the first hurdle, last. Black Monitor went on with the lead directly after passing the post, and May Moon, who was pulling Hurston half out of tqe saddle, went up. The second time round, May Moon challenged the leader on the far side. The struggle became interesting. Coming into the straight, May Moon, though she stumbled at the last hurdle but one, took the lead, and won by two lengths easily.
