At the Nuggets, there is a reef close to the south side of the ridge, about eight feet thick, and, from what is p-rceptible, about a chain wide, consisting of a solid conglomeration of sea shells. A pair of back swans were seen the other disporting themselves on the bosom of the waters of the Mataura, immediately above the falls. The Hon W. Menzies is a candidate for the representation of Invercargill in the Southland Provincial Council. On last an unfortunate accident befel a young man employed on Messrs Douglas, Alderson and Co.’s Pomabaka station. While engaged in breaking-iu or working a young colt, the man’s left hand in some way got entangled in the harness, the chain trace having a turn round his wrist. Before the horse could be subdued the man’s hand was so fearfully mangled that amputation will be necessary. Dr Smith attended and dressed the wound, so as to enable the poor fellow to proceed to Dunedin Hospital. In view of Mr Hanghton’s resignation of his seat as member of the Provincial’Council for the Council, Mr diaries Colclongh, storekeeper, Cardroua, is being brought forward as a candidate.
The Government have presented Mr Colclom.h with LSO, and the promise of a gold medal, for his invaluable services rendered to Constable Hunt when murderously attacked by the lunatic Motlierstone, a l ', I'ardmna, last year. It is to be hoped that Mr Hunt, who risked his life in making the arrest, will not be overlooked,’ Mr Driver has called the attention of the Bruce Herald to the statement made by that journal on the authority of “ its own reporter,” to the effect that he (Mr DHver) had supported the adoption of 6s per acre as the amount of compensation to runholders under the Hundreds Regulation Bill, and informs us that 4s per acre was the sum proposed and voted by him in the caucus of Otago members held previous to the diseusion of the amount in the House of Representatives.
