THE GAS QUESTION.
The following in a copy of the letter forwarded by the gas committee to Mr A. K. Smith, which was read at the meeting of the Council yesterday “City Council Chambers, “Dunedin, 17th August, 1809. “ Dear Sir,—l have the honor, by the direction of the City Council of Dunedin, to inform you, that at their last meeting, a resolution was passed, to have plans and speeilications pr pared forthwith for new Gas Works fur the Corporation of this city, in terms of your recent report. The Council therefore request that you will forthwith proceed with the preparation of the necessary plans and specifications for such works as you deem necessary for the extended requirements of the City ; having due regard to permanence and efficiency, combined with economy in carrying out the same, and on condition that you are prepared to furnish such plans, &c., subject to the terms following : —‘That in the event of the Council deciding not to accept any of the tenders which may be ultimately lodged for tin- completion of the contract, your charge for drawing up the plans and specifications (three sets) and any work connected therewith, shall not exceed the sum of (1,200) two hundred pounds. That in the event of any tender being accepted by t c Council you are to be paid a commission of 24 per cent, on the amount of the contract for the three sets, plans and specifications ; and, should the Council determine to employ you, you will be prepared professionally to superintend the carrying out of any contract which may be made between the Corporation and a third part}' for the erect on of the works, for which further service you are to be paid a commission of 2!j per cent. ’ “Be good enough to send a set of plans and specifications to Dunedin as soon as completed, and say when you jnvpose to have the two reman ining sets open for inspection, in Sydney an 1 Melbourne, waiting however, for the Council’s further instructions on this latter point. Alsu, please say when the Council may calculate upon the completion of the plans, &c., in order to the works being advertised in Sydney, Melbourne, and New Zealand. The Council desire that the specifications may be so drawn as to enable tenderers to send home for the necessary material, .and that provision be made for the entire completion of the contract by Ist Aug st, 1870. The members of the Council hope that their propositions as herein made, will meet your views, and trust to your expediting their commissions, as no doubt you will without delay.
