RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before the Hon. A. C. Strode, R.M.)

DRUNKENNESS. Ann Dmibar was charged under the "Vagrant Ordinance with being an habitual drunkard, and she was sent to Jail for two months with hard labor. CIVII- CASES. Hugh Cann v. John Falkner, claim of Ll2 3s, for damage sustained by the breakage of a sheet of plate glass by the defendant. Mr Ward appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Wilson for the defendant. From the evidence given it appeared thet the defendant and others went into the London Hotel, and they were followed by a drunken man who asked them to give him a drink, which they refused to do, some words then ensued, when the defendant was struck in the face by this man, and in defence he pushed him away, and in doing so the man fell against the glass and broke it. Mr Wilson submitted that the action ought to have been brought against the man who had been the cause of the breakage. The Magistrate deferred his decision until Monday. Wm. M'Grath v. Philips and Walker, claim yf £1 16s for work done. The defendant's admitted the claim, but requested time. Judgment by consent was given for the amount claimed, and costs, to be paid in weekly instalments of 10s each. Geo. Grighton v. Robert Blake, claim of 10s for firewood supplied. Judgment for the amount claimed with costs. In the following cases judgment by default was given for the amount claimed with costs. Bastings' Trustees v. Frederick Parker, claim of L 5 16s lid, balance of an account due. Boyle and Co. v. Louis Young, claim of L 9 4m for porter supplied. Ross' and Glendenning v. Wm. Co'tterjllj claim of L 9 2s for amount of a dishonored acceptance. Barr and Co. v. Wm. Solomon, claim of L 3 19s Id for meat supplied. The following cases were dismissed in consequence of the non-appearance of either party : Jack v. Collie, Cassey v. Sullivan.

The case of John Jones and Co. v. Briscoe and Co., which had been adjourned to give the Magistrate time to consider the objections raised by the defendant's solicitor, was decided by judgment being given for the plaintiffs for the amount claimed with costs.
