COUNTRY NEWS.
Punstajv.—On. Wednesday last a storekeeper named Napier, who resides in Butcher's Gully, left Alexandra in company with two Other men, and proceeded in the direction of Campbell's. "While crossing the Old Man Range the three very narrowly escaped losing their lives. They were travelling along a sideling, when an immense accumulation of snow suddenly fell and overwhelmed them. They were precipitated down a steep gully, and were unable to regain the track. A horse they had with them at the time became embedded in the snow, and they consequently had to leave him. They travelled on for some time, and at length made a creek, which they followed until they reached the river near Fourteen-mile Beach, which is many miles away from the track that leads to Campbell's.—Dunstan Times, Nov. 1. On Sunday last a large number of miners from different parts of the district, left Cromwell for the West Coast, via Pyke's track. Parties have preceded them with the intention of prospecting aa they went along.— lbid.
