MINING INTELLIGENCE.
Black's Diggings.—Black's No. 3 still maintains its character as a first-rate diggings. One party there had their first washing-up last -week, which one hundred and fifty ounces. The party referred to had sunk several shafts, and had missed the lead or struck water. They had been at work nearly six months' without any return before t\\ey had the washing-up just mentioned. The gold obtained is sufficient to repay them for all their outlay of labor and money, and they have now a splendid prospect before them. There are several other claims turning out splendidly. At this diggings the dirt is puddled ; and we believe the only two puddling machines on the Goldfields are to be found at work here.— Uunstan Times, Nov. 1. Skipper's.—Some very flattering prospects have been obtained at the reefs at Skippers. A second line of stone has been found on the Prince of Wales and Alexandra Companies ground. The specimens are very rich. The new reef is quite distinct from the other. These claims are at the furthest end of the reef. The specimens and news were brought down by Mr James Tyree, of the Alexandra. At the eastern end of this reef, a distance of as much as three miles, a discovery of a rich reef has been made next to the "Vulcan Company's ground—so that the intelligence is really cheering. Mr Millett has for the last ten days been engaged in laying out seven leases and one prospecting claim. "We are glad to state that the.prospects of the Morning Star Company, Arthur's Point, Shotover, are improving, and that the company anticipate some favorable yields. They have just finished building another new ■wheel. A crushing of the Scandinavian Company, Skipper's, of- some twenty tons of stone, has resulted in a cake of about eighty, ounces of gold. This, however, cannot be taken as a fair test of the quality of the stone crushed, as doubtless much precious metal was lost through the imperfection of the machinery employed. The Criterion Company, Arrow, have, accepted tenders for timber-work, and for their headdam, and are calling for further tenders for ■works necessary for the immediate working of the reef, and raising of stone. We believe the company has been at great disadvantage in the construction of their works, owing to the high rate of wages.— WaJcatip Mail, Nov. 1.
