BABY'S BODY FOUND
POLICE INVESTIGATING
Climbing over a fence into a vacant section in Taranaki Street to recover a ball yesterday afternoon, one of a party of boys noticed a paper parcel lying in the section; when he lifted the paper back he saw the head of a baby. The boys rushed round to the Mount Cook Police Station, leaving the parcel undisturbed, and a party of police investigated the discovery. The parcel contained the body of a newly-born full-time female European child. It had been wrapped in cheesecloth and then in- brown paper.- The matter was referred to the detective branch for investigation, and this morning a post-mortem examination was made of the body.
It was estimated that death had occurred only a short time before the body was found. No external marks of violence were discovered, although the child had breathed. It was thought possible that the baby had died in the position in which it was found. The police would welcome any information likely to be of assistance in the case.
