GOING TO ELLERSLIE

DERBY CANDIDATES

MASTER ROBIN & AL-SIRAT

After rain overnight conditions were good at Trentham this morning for training in preparation for the Pahiatua Meeting at Woodville on Saturday and the holiday gatherings to follow. The outside of the course proper was available, but the majority of the gallops were restricted to short sprints. W. Bryce is already at Ellerslie with Hormuz and Tuis, as is W. Hawthorn with Deprive, Riverview,- and Alcyone. It now appears that the last-named was not an acceptor for the Christmas Handicap at Woodville, having been left in the telegraphed list in error. The tracks were opened early this morning to enable Master Robin, who is to contest the Great Northern Derby, to work the reverse v/ay. In company with Caithness, he was sent over a mile, and although not timed he got through his task in pleasing fashion. That other local candidate for the Derby, Al-Sirat, was let off with an easy task. Both three-year-olds will leave for Ellerslie tomorrow. Repudiate, who was in the Foal Stakes, is not making the trip. Foxcatcher and Leighon's Glory were associated over a mile and were going well within themselves throughout tp run the last half-mile in 54sec. W. J. Broughton will ride the former at Woodville on Saturday. Superium and Jolly Goodfellow were on terms at the completion' of six furlongs in 1.24, the last half-mile m 54sec. Jolly Goodfellow ran quite a fair race at his last start and is showing improvement in his work. Master Dash and Omit were sent half a mile, coming home in 50sec. The former is looking a picture of condition. Gay Stroller, a stablemate, followed and put plenty of dash into his work. , . . Master Baron and Yasda jumped away better than Balcherrie beyond the half-mile peg, being a couple of lengths clear, from which peg they ran home in 50 4-ssec. Yasda was under a firm hold throughout. Blue Simon was not asked to give of his best when running half a mile in 54sec, a distance that Blue Bonny covered in 50sec. Barrage and Salut d'Amour pleased by doing five furlongs in 1.6, the last half-mile in 51sec. It was quite a useful effort on the part of the latter. Greek Honour and Begowned were sent a mile in 1.54, taking 57sec for each half.

Royal Baron and the Kincardine — Te Marua two-year-old were companions aver half a mile in 50 2-ssec, with the latter showing distinct promise for an unraced youngster. Four maiden gallopers from W. J. Bromby's stable, Yalta (Sporting Blood —Mistress Quickly), Beau Son (Sir Beau—Waiongona), Howe (DefoeMalmsey), and Gushing (Tiderace— Lady Gustavo), were practically on terms throughout over half a mile in 50sec. Howe, a ' full-brother to Foxcatcher and Aqua, appears to have more size than her relatives did at the same age.

Transmitter gained an early advantage over Donegal Bay and Big Money when they jumped away from the halfmile, and he held his lead to run the journey in 50 l-ssec, being about three lengths clear at the post. Theio Light and High Order registered 50 3-ssec over half a mile, while Rothnic and Royal Sward took 51 4-5 sec. Lastik was sent over a pony hurdle several times out in the oval, jumping safely. P. Spratt is taking two of the juveniles, Prince Fox (Foxbridge—Golden Princess) and Champa Kalee (Balloch —Wyndale).' The latter, a filly, is a commanding type, but she has not as yet sported silk. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Riding engagements announced for the Pahiatua Meeting, where Trentham horsemen and horses are involved, are: J.
