VIGOUR OF BRITAIN
MR. ATTLEE'S DECLARATION
LONDON, November 26. '•Whatever may befall us, we shall not be content ever to endure the suggestion that we are old, effete, and done," declared the Prime Minister, Mr. Attlee, in a speech at a banquet of the Worshipful Company of Bakers. "I believe we can build up industry just as we are going to build up the old city of London. "Britain's great contributions to civilisation are not exhausted. . W« have something to give the world. Our conceptions of freedom and democracy, the rule of law and moral standards are of permanent value to the world. We make our contribution mindful of our great past but believing in our future." The Prime Minister said it was a day for all British people not to hark b,ack to the past but to look forward to the future. It was a remarkable thing that ancient institutions like the City of London or the Bakers' Company might in the course of years change their exact functions but they were always adapted to the need ot the new age. Mr. Attlee added the Labour' Government realised it was not in at an easy time and was prepared for the cokTblasts of criticism that it was already receiving.
