ENGLISH IN N.Z.
Sir,—What a pity it is that immigrants to New Zealand cannot receive a better welcome than they do. One appears to be a marked man—or woman —as soon as the fact is known that they come from England. "Just a pommy." I have noticed this dislike for English people time and time again. Being an Englishman myself—and proud of it—l have had to suffer that common accusatory expression. The peculiar part of it is that the enmity seems to come more from the Australians that are in this country than the New Zealanders. —I am, etc., A COMMON POMMY. Raurimu, November 14.
"Another Charitable Patriot," referring to suggestions that assistance should be given to German people who are suffering from lack of food, clothing, and shelter, says that Hitler voiced the aspirations of 90 per cent. lof the German people in seeking world domination and the remainder only differed with him in the means of obtaining that end. He suggests that the money that Professor Allen and other correspondents have offered to contribute could be put to better use in helping those who have suffered over the actions of the German nation. "The sufferings of the least of our people," says the correspondent, "are more to me than the starvation of the whole German race."
