DIRECT ACTION

FARMERS AND THE QUOTA

P.A. . WANGANUI, : October 28. When an effort was made at a meeting of farmers in Marton, called to discuss the country quota issue, to have a reference to taking direct action deleted from a motion, it was overwhelmingly defeated, only 18 of an attendance of nearly 150 voting for the deletion. The meeting, which was held on Saturday, grew too big for the Rangitikei County Hall to accommodate and it had to move to the Druids' Hall.

The motion finally carried was:— "That the meeting expresses the strongest objection to the undemocratic action of the Government in introducing a measure to abolish the country quota without first placing the issue before the electors in a general election or by referendum. We call on Dominion headquarters of the Federated Farmers to place our views before the Prime Minister and demand that proper constitutional steps be taken to have the issue decided by the electors under the present law. Failing this we are compelled reluctantly to pledge our support to direct or any other action the Dominion president and his executive decide to take." .. The meeting was representative of farmers on the Main Trunk from Taihape to Marton, throughout Rangitikei, and the Feilding and Waituna West areas.
