SPECIAL STUDY COURSE
WELLINGTON GIRL RETURNS
FROM MELBOURNE
Miss Florence Hislop, of Wellington, who has been studying occupational therapy in Melbourne for the past eight months, returned recently with Miss Sybi] Rush, of Hastings. She went to Australia under the auspices of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and New Zealand Red Cross Society.
The New Zealanders have concentrated on diversional therapy, which may be likened to an introduction or preliminary to occupational therapy. It takes the minds of the servicemen off their disabilities in the first place, an aim that is more intensified under occupational therapy. At the headquarters centre, the course followed has included weaving, bookbinding, leather plaiting, leather work, and making gloves and felt toys. Besides attendance at the Red' Cross national handicraft school, visits have been arranged to Red" Cross base hospitals, convalescent homes, the Rehabilitation Unit of the R.A.A.F. at Warburton. and the Army Convalescent Depot at Ballarat.Miss Hislop has also taken special instruction in art, pottery, and modelling. , ' .. , , ..,,-. ~
Before leaving for Australia she was organising occupational therapy departments in hospitals for disabled servicemen and earlier was in charge of the same work at the American Hospital at Silverstream. .
