TOO LATE

PROTESTATION OF INNOCENCE

P.A. AUCKLAND, This Day. "I know in my heart and soul I am innocent, and I hope the good Lord will have mercy on me," said Kenneth Joseph Foster, 31, a labourer, when he came before Mr. Justice Finlay for sentence. Foster was ~ convicted last week for breaking and entering a jeweller's shop in Pukekohe and stealing £460 worth of goods. "It's too late to say that," retorted the Judge. "I agree with the verdict of the jury. The evidence was overI whelming. Whether or not you were the leading spirit I do not know." The sooner Foster realised his responsibilities, his Honour, said, the better it would be for himself and his wife and child. A sentence of two years' hard labour tp be followed by twelve months' reformative detention, was imposed.
