EXCELLENT RESULTS

LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY

"The results gained in the past season were excellent, despite a season that began late and closed early, states the annual report of the Wellington branch of the Royal Life-saving Society, to be presented at the annual meeting on October 15. The number of awards issued, 1966, exceeded by 80 the record total of the 1942-43 season. Some of the classes prepared did not complete their work owing to uncertain weather. "Until Wellington, the Capital of the Dominion, is equipped with adequate tepid bath facilities, the number of awards issued in Wellington will continue to fluctuate," the report adds. A pleasing feature that must have an ever-increasing beneficial effect on the work of the society was the increasing number of baths being installed in the Wellington district. In most cases the baths were large enough for life-saving examinations, and some of the schools concerned would soon be appearing on the active list of the society. The branch had a busy time issuing awards to the R.N.Z.A.F. The work was begun by two members . of the executive in the Air Force—Flight Lieutenant J. White and Flying Officer O. S. Meads. The Wellington branch provided each station with handbooks and examination forms and a high standard was maintained. The examiners and instructors did an excellent j job, and the report expresses appre-1 ciation to those officers of the j R.N.Z.A.F. who assisted. Trophies were won as follows:— The S. A. Longuet Shield: Queen Mar- I garet College. William Henry Memorial Cup (No. 1): Hutt Valley High School. William Henry Memorial Cup (No. 2): Mrs. I. McCabe's classes. Empire trophies were won as follows:— William Henry Memorial Cup: Western Australia 1, Queensland 2, Auckland 3. Sydney J. Monks Memorial Trophy: Wellington 1, Auckland 2, Victoria 3. The work of Mrs. I. L. McCabe, of Wellington, and of Mrs. J. T. E. Brenkley, of Masterton, in training young swimmers, is eulogised in the report. The balance-sheet shows an excess of income over expenditure of £34 13s 6d.
