POTATOES AND ONIONS

NOT NEEDED FOR OVERSEAS

With the cessation of hostilities in the Pacific and the early withdrawal of the greater portion of the Allied forces in that area the overseas demand for potatoes and onions from New Zealand during the past three years has disappeared, said the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Roberts) today.

Information had now been received that no potatoes or onions would be required by American forces after December, and it therefore became essential to reduce the area planted in the South Island in the next. two months to that normally grown in prewar years, otherwise a serious glut and disastrous prices to growers might result, said the Minister. South Island growers should therefore confine themselves to normal market quantities. If growers desired the Government was prepared to consider continuing the contract system up to the extent of normal civilian requirements.
