LACK OF LABOUR

BRITISH INDUSTRY AFFECTED

LONDON, September 31

An appeal to the Government to relax controls as far as possible commensurate with controlling inflation and ensuring fair distribution was made by Mr. J. S. Dodd, in a presidential address to the Association of British Chambers of Commerce.

Mr. Dodd, describing the man-power shortage, declared that a galling situation had arisen in which firms had plant ready and large orders and materials on hand, but had not the labour to produce finished goods. "Every employer knows the necessity of exports for the country, but he has the fear that overseas competitors may be in the market well ahead of him," he said.
