NEW GUINEA SURRENDER
SATO PRAYS AS HE HANDS OVER HIS SWORD
SYDNEY, September 11. Muttering prayers i'or forgiveness to his ancestors, Rear-Admiral Sato reluctantly handed his sword to MajorGeneral H. C. Robertson, commander of the 6th Australian Division, /and surrendered all the Japanese imperial naval forces and their arms and accoutrements in New Guinea.
The surrender documents were signed on the quarterdeck of the Royal Australian Navy patrol vessel Fairmile, anchored amid the ruins of the former enemy seaplane base at Kairiru Island. The ceremony took less than five minutes. Sato, tall, bald, ill, and more than 60 years old, was visibly moved when he reluctantly surrendered his sword after a tentative protest.
