COASTAL DEFENCE

CHANGED BY NEW RADAR

NEW YORK, September 9

A new radar set revolutionising coastal artillery defence has been designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sets were operated along' the coast of the United States and Iwo Jima before the end of the war. v

The apparatus can pick up vessels at least 25 miles away, with d clarity hitherto impossible. The radar automatically gives the guns information on the target's range and bearing and can even detect seagulls in flight. It also enables ships to be guided to safe anchorages.
