ERADICATION DEMANDED
JAPANESE ORGANISED TERRORISM
LONDON, September 10. "If those responsible for these outrages are allowed to escape punishment, it will be the grossest defeat of justice and a travesty of the principles for which the war has been fought." said the Attorney-General (Dr. Evatt), in a statement to the Press on Mr. Justice Webb's report.
Dr. Evatt's statement indicates that as far as Australia is concerned there will be no soft peace for Japan. He added that the Australian Government, in its demands that all Japanese criminals be brought to trial, was not actuated by a spirit of revenge, but by a profound feeling of justice and of responsibiliy to ensure that the next generation of Australians was spared frightful experiences of the kind which Sir William Webb's report revealed. "It is our duty to see that those who organised the system of terrorism, in which all Japanese troops and, commanders participated, are punished and that the system itself is completely eradicated," he said. "In our view, those at the top are at least equally guilty with the actual perpetrators on the spot."
