ONE FAVOURITE ONLY

WANGANUI UPSETS

HONOURS TO CRAMOND BAY

With form erratic, patrons at Uin opening day of the Wanganui Spring Meeting' on Saturday had many problems. Only one favourite fulfilled expectations. Rain on the preceding day and on the morning itself made the track heavy, but the racing was of a high standard throughout, the finishes in the majority of instances being close and exciting". There was a large crowd present, and the totalisaior handled £43,958, compared with £27.557 on the first day last year. Favourite for the Marangai Handicap, the principal flat race, Lord Darnley was one of the leaders passing through the straight going away from home, and- although he endeavoured to steal a march on the field going down the back stretch, Cramond Bay followed him and then moved up to the leader before the straight: was reached. When the pressure was applied Lord Daniley commenced to run about, and his rider had to steady him, with the result that Cramond Bay. who had scored at New Plymouth! ■ a'week earlier, drew clear. Over the last half-furlong Lord Darnley wasi running on again, but Cramond Bay went on to a comfortable victory by J three lengths. Keen Play, who had; been towards the rear going clown the i back/commenced to make up his lee-1 way from the five-furlong post, butthe gap was too great to bridge, -al-l though he got up. to beat Ganges, who had been handy all the way. for third. Then came Duality. Black Plato, and Macedoine, the last-named finishing with a remarkable dash after being at the tail of the field swinging across! the top. . I READY-MADE GALLOPER. j At the New Plymouth parade a week earlier Kirstymac and Blue Simon followed one another home, and in the Wanganui Debutant Stakes the same pair paid the dividends, but whereas Kirstymac was a firm favourite, Blue Simon was at good odds. The winner showed herself to be a ready- ! made galloper, and she should improve on the uncertain record of winners of this particular event. Several of the candidates showed greenness at the barrier, and Bulaselle swung completely round as the tapes were lifted. Royal Baron forged1 !to the front almost immediately to lead across the top from Scroll and Blue Tie, but in the next half-furlong Kirstymac ran up to join the leader and take charge before the straight was reached. Although Blue Simon came home very solidly he could not bridge the gap. Kirstymac being two lengths clear at the post from Blue Simon, with Royal Baron, who compounded over the last furlong, beaten for third by Blue Tie. who was finishing on. There was a gap of four [lengths to Bramerton, who was followed in by Opulent, Indira, and Cinereous. * The well-backed Julius ■Caesar was in a hopeless position ; early. : NANOOK AT GOOD ODDS. ! Ranking eleventh in a field of ( lo ■ runners m .the Okehu Hack Hurdled, ■Nanook took the honours quite dei finitely' after a short, sharp struggle 'with Foe-brae. While the runner-up was in or near the van the whole way Nanook was towards the rear with five furlongs to go, but he made up much of his leeway crossing the top. 'and maintained his run in /v thp straight. It was a very sound effort. When the field had settled down Fox-brae and Kiwi Pai were showing the way to Tatara Lad, Parekura, Peach King, Norse. Our Nation, and Peter's Choice. Passing through the straight Gold Money Song, who had lost several lengths at the start, raced up to attend the leaders, with Our Nation also ranging up. Kiwi Pai having commenced to give \vay. Willi five furlongs to go Our Nation joined j issue with Fox-brae and Gold Money] Song, but she almost immediately gave] way again. Meantime, Nanook had commenced his run from the back and | although under pressure, he stayed on, too well for Fox-brae. Our 4 'Nation, came again in the straight to beatj Colonel Bogey, who ran a valiant race for third, with Gold Money Song just, ahead of Peach King, Rhodes, and, Peter's Choice. The last-named was favourite, and as it was his first outing in public he should be improved by the experience. RUN IN DIVISIONS. The Maiden Race was'run in two divisions, the first being ■marred by an indifferent dispatch, altnough it produced a wonderful iimsh ; live horses being' spread across the course in rough line. St. Lucien and Tahli were prominent early, but turning for home Buckle rah past to show the way into the straight from Delinquent and j.ahh, with Brown Derby moving up into third place. Unfortunately, in the straight, Brown Derby commenced to bore off the course, and just when Delinquent had taken over from Buckle, Michael.loomed up.on the rail to challenge, with Dymondy and Soneri challenging further out, and in thg last stride Dymondy got up to win by a nose from Michael, with Delinquent at a similar margin. Then came Soneri, j practically in line, Buckle, and High ! Order,- the last-named having had his way barred. .. . Making' a smart beginning, Merciful, a bold galloper, led along the' back and across the top in the second division, but approaching the straight entrance he was joined by Second Seal, with Broderic. Pay Acre, Grey Donne, and Colopier at the head of a strungout field. Kept up to his work,. Second Seal drew away to win by six lengths from Merciful, with Pay Acre another couple of lengths back. Provider came home well for fourth, with Te Herojine, Blue Moon, and Broderie in a i bunch. I HAT-TRICK TO W. J. BROUGHTON. Although ii late defection brought !;the-number-of runners in the Diu-ie Hack Handicap within the safety num-

bcr, the totalizator had already opened and the divisions had to bo proceeded with. la the first division White Cap showed the way to Battle Survey and The Grand into the straight, but in the run home Battle Survey held on to win by a neck from Wayside, who came home* well, with The Grand third and ahead oi' Battle Dance and White Cap. From a ragged start, Controller fovyeel to the front in the second divi--1 siori from Golden Kea. Midflame, and Sherwood Forest, but in the next furlong Lord Coronach ran forward to be clear at the straight entrance from Kilarney Boy, Golden Kea, and Lily Ann. Over the Inal furlong Lord Coronach was never in danger of defeat., and he was holding a two lengths' advantage over Lily Ann at the post, with Home Rule putting in a late claim for third. Montosorrie, a'Jong way back early, Hashed up into fourth. Both Controller and Kilarney Boy failed to go on with it. Yandra was badly left. The win' of Battle Survey gave W. J. Broughton his third win in succession. i The connections 61 Broielov were fined ;£]()'for the late scratching of the topweight. A DESPERATE FINISH. In the Sealield Hack Handicap there was an exciting finish between Master j Ted and Lady Chips, who ranked first I and second favourite respectively. I Lady Chips getting up on the post to score by a short head. As she did not enjoy as good a run as the favourite she deserved the honours. j Racing into the back straight Don jMac and Master Ted were1 on terms, but half a furlong later. Tiiox and Specialist joined issue to assume charge, the newcomers leading Master Ted, Treasure Tee, and Solver across the top and into the straight. Lady Chips secured an opening to shoot through, but she was flat out to gather up Master Ted, who ran a great race for a I fresh horse. Solver was a good third, I with Tifox and Behave heading the | bunch. I A SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER. A minor surprise came in the Putiki Hack Handicap when Stony Broke, who had been racing over sprint courses, was transferred to the mile and a quarter event, to take the honours in good style. Pie was in the van early in company with Village Squire, the pair carrying the field along at a sound pace. Approaching the straight Hulabaloo pushed to the front to have a half-length lead from Stony Broke, and then came Sporting Way, ahead of Dark Morning, Roto Parera, and Foxstar, with Well Armed next. On straightening up for home Stony Broke came through along the rail to take the lead and hold off the challengers quite comfortably. Hulabaloo and Dark Morning crossed the line on terms, with Foxstar handy. Then came Sporting Way and Chef d'Oeuvre. Casilda was slow to find her feet and was tailed oft' all the way. KURI THE FLYING .HANDICAP. The series of reverses suffered by favourites was carried a further stage in the Flying Handicap, the concluding event, when Bridge Acre failed to get into the money. In another keen struggle ior supremacy, Kuri, who had not raced since taking the Oroua Hack Cup at Feilding at Easter,' wore down Royal Heir to capture the open sprint. Despite beiiig badly drawn. Royal Heir made a brilliant beginning in company with Royal Greek and Leybourne, but Plato Lad forged to the front to pilot Royal Raider to the turn for home, 'where Lord'Theio, who had bene a trifle, slow to move, ran .up fast to be attending them, with Vivid Night also looming up. On reaching the straight Royal Raider and Lord Theio were in the van from Plato Lad. Royal-Heir, Vivid Night, Poutatau, and Bridge Acrej but just when Royal Heir appeared to have the race won Kuri ranged up on the outer to take the honours in a great finish by half a neck, with Leybourne three-quarters of a. length back. After being towards the rear early, Colonel Vaals flashed up along the rail for a close fourth, with Bridge Acre, Lord Theio. and Dei'ryogue all handy. THE DETAILED RESULTS.
