ADMIRAL KIMMEL
OFFERED COURT-MARTIAL
Rec. 9 a.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. 8. The Secretary of the Navy, Mr. James V. Forrestal, in a letter to Senator Walsh, chairman of the Senate Naval Committee, said the navy had offered Admiral Husband E. Kimmel a court-martial if he desired one.
Mr. Forrestal disclosed that Admiral Ernest J. King, and also the Navy's Judg3 Advocate-General recommended before the Pearl Harbour report was issued that Admiral Kimmel be given a courtrmartial. The fact was not revealed because the navy did not wish him to feel constrained by publicity when replying to the offer.
Senator Walsh had asked for the complete file of the navy's investigation . Mr. Forrestal forwarded a record of the evidence taken by Admiral Hart in 1944, but pointed out that naval committees of the Senate and House had to decide whether public interest would be served by compromising the sources of information revealed.
Admiral King contended that information was obtained from sources of such great present and prospective value to national security that they should be safeguarded to the utmost.
