VICTORY CELEBRATIONS
PRECAUTIONS BY LICENSEES
The president of the Wellington •Licensed Victuallers' Association states that the licensed victuallers of Wellington were at a disadvantage when statements of a critical nature, alleging indiscriminate sales of liquor, were made at the recent meeting of ■ the Licensing Committee.
He points out that there was no opportunity at that tims for reply, and suggests that it is only fair to licensees to mention that they endeavoured well in advance of VJ pay to take precautions against over-indulgence or indiscriminate drinking on an occasion when some of the people might be expected to show their joy and reLief by actions more extravagant than normal. It was with the full concurrence of the licensed trade that the hotels, instead of opening at 10 a.m., were kept closed until 1.30 p.m.. thus lessening the opportunities of those who might be tempted to over-indulge on VJ Day.
Indiscriminate drinking in the streets by young people, he added, was a matter over which hotel licensees could not exercise control, because they could take every precaution against the illegal sale of liquor to minors, but could not refuse to mnke a legal sale of bottled beer which then went out of their control.
