NO MORE RECRUITS
Women's Land Service
No further recruits would be accepted for the Women's Land Service, stated the Minister of National Service (Mr. McLagan) today. "With the easing of the farm labour position as a result of the cessation of hostilities and the release of large numbers of experienced farm workers from the Armed Forces," said Mr. McLagan, "the Government has decided that no new members should be accepted for the Land Service. The organisation will, however, be retained meanwhile, and land girls already accepted into the service will continue as members under the existing conditions."
The Women's Land Service was originally established for the purpose of assisting to maintain food production when the threat of invasion to New Zealand necessitated the withdrawal to the forces of every possible fit man. The number at present in the service was not available today, but according to the last annual report of the National Service Department there were 1879 in the service at the end of March, 1914.
