MAORIS & SOCIAL SECURITY
Sir,—"Half-caste" is to be complimented on his discretion in his choice of nom-de-plume in his congratulatory statement of Mr. Goosman's remarks on the Maori and the abuses of social security. At present the Maori population is increasing, but this increase is not in the purity of blood. Distinguishing between the population and the race, we find that of the total population no more than half are of pure Maori descent, and that the number of mixed blood is increasing rather more rapidly than those of unmixed blood. The pure Maori population is giving way to a population of varying degrees of mixed blood. Your correspondents "Dragon" and "Maraea Whakanaka" have stated in these columns that the Maori of 60 years ago was more self-reliant. Would the deficiencies suggested by Mr. Mackley and other Opposition members as to the Maori exploitation of political legislation be due to his pioneer pakeha ancestors —purely hereditary?—l anrt, etc., O.T.
