BUTCHERS' CLOSING
AUCKLAND OBJECTION
PtA. AUCKLAND, This Day. Suggestions that the butchers should close their shops on Monday and hold an all-day meeting were not favoured at a meeting of the Auckland Master Butchers' Association which was held last night to consider the proposals submitted by the Dominion executive. About 60 members attended. The proposal to close on Monday to consider the problems confronting the trade evoked lively discussion. It was pointed out that the trade had an obligation to meet the needs of the public and agreement was finally reached that the butchers would remain open and hold the proposed meeting in the evening.
A fire in the.varnish room of Berger's paint factory, Torrens Street, yesterday afternoon did some damage to an iron roof, rafters, and woodwork. The cause of the outbreak was some varnish which had become overheated. Seven fire engines—five from Central and two from Constable Street —answered the call, but one lead of hose soon had the fire under control.
