MEDALS PRESENTED

WELLINGTON NURSES

'Nurses of the Wellington Hospital who had gained their right to registration, many with honours, at the recent State nurses' examinations were honoured last night in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall when medals were presentee at a public function. Wellington student nurses have been most successful in these recent examinations, with a record number of passes, and a very high proportion of honours, and a Wellington Hospital student-nurse, Nurse Phoebe Downes, topped the Dominion. This year's gold medallist, an honour gamed by consistent proficiency throughout the three-year course, is Nurse Nancy Lampp. . Addressing the large gathering of relatives, friends, and sister nurses, the chairman of the board (Mr. H. F. Toogood) congratulated the nurses who had passed their examinations with such. credit to themselves and to the hospital and its staff under the Superintendent (Dr. J. Cairney) and the matron (Miss Clark), and thanked them for their loyal and splendid assistance, without which the hospital could not have carried on. On the other hand, he believed, the hospital gave student-nurses a training and knowledge which would be of the greatest value to them throughout their lives. Dr. Cairney added his congratulations and said that in point of examination successes the year had been a remarkable one. Of 44 nurses who had sat the full examination 43 had passed and one had gained a partial pass. Thirteen Wellington nurses had gained honours, and Nurse Downes had gained the notable honour of topping the Dominion.

Miss Lambie, Director of the Nursing Divison, spoke of the successes of the year and of the efficiency of New Zealand nurses overseas in all theatres of war.
