WELFARE PAYMENTS
EX-SERVICE PERSONNEL
A suggestion that all gifts made to assist in rehabilitating servicemen should be free of duty and tax, and that distributions made to returned servicemen from the residue in patriotic, welfare, and canteen funds should be free of tax and not interfere with any pensions was made by Mr. E. P. Aderman (National, New Plymouth) when speaking on the annual taxing Bill in the House of Representatives last night. Representations had been made on behalf of Taranaki servicemen about the disposal of the funds, and the Minister's reply was entirely unsatisfactory, said Mr. Aderman. He did give some assurance that with small, intermittent amounts there might be a relief from taxation, but he could give no assurance whatever if an allocation were sustained in any way. The money in the funds represented . the sacrifice of New Zealanders so that servicemen would not be in need, and should not be taxed.
