INCREASED DEMAND NOW
LONDON, September 6. The Minister of Labour, Mr. Isaacs, stated at a Press conference that the numbers employed on munitions would be reduced from 5,000,000 in the middle of last year to 3,000,000 at the end of October, after which they would be quickly reduced. The figures included all engaged in the building and | repairing of ships and also large numbers required for equipment for stores for the forces. The end of the war against Japan had increased the demand for shipping for passages to Britain, India, and Australia for about 150,000 prisoners. All the ships and aircraft available would be employed for that purpose. Acceptance of* responsibility for the South-west Pacific, which the United States formerly undertook, had also increased the shipping liabilities. The Government did not intend to release out of turn men and women who were temporarily idle at home, and thus would keep faith with the members of the Services overseas.
