BAG OF GOLD
MISSING FROM PLANE
NEW ZEALAND SHIPMENT
Rec. 9 a.m. CANBERRA, September 5. A mail bag of gold was stolen from an aeroplane flying between Sydney and Melbourne this morning:. Upon Ihe arrival of the plane in Melbourne a replica of the bag was found to contain only nuts and bolts wrapped up in newspaper. The gold had been shipped from New Zealand to Sydney and was to have been taken to Melbourne. The closest secrecy was observed about the thefc and neither the police nor i air officials would confirm or deny the report. However, the theft was reported this morning to the Postmaster-General, Senator Cameron. The authorities say it is one of the most audacious thefts committed in many years. It is believed that the bag of nuts and bolts was substituted for the bag of gold some time before the bag was placed on the Sydney-Melbourne plane.
MINING COMPANY GOLD?
Inquiries made in Wellington today from the Reserve Bank, Mines Department; and other sources failed to disclose that they had shipped any gold lately. It was stated that it seemed likely that the bag of gold would be from one of the mining companies, and that it was on its way to the Mint in Melbourne to be assayed.
