CHESS

N.Z. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

When play was concluded in the inter-Island telegraphic match between Otago and Wellington Chess Clubs 12 games were not' finished. Agreement regarding eight of these has now been reached by Messrs. Wade and McDermid, the two captains. Wins are scored by Dr. Elizabeth Meyer and Mr. J. K. L. Webling, for Wellington, and by Messrs. G. D. Wright and A. Kwok, for Otago. Four games are drawn as follows, the local name being given first in each case:—Gyles v. McDermott, Kelling v. Coombs, Beyer v. Stenhouse, and Kent v. Lawson. The score is now eight-all, with four games to be accounted for. Three of these positions are to be adjudicated on in Auckland. The remaining game depends on the correct interpretation of the rule which stipulates that a player must abide by a mistake made at his board. Owing to war and travel restrictions the annual visits to Palmerston North had to be" suspended, but now that certain restrictions have been lifted, the Wellington Chess League has arranged for a team to go to Palmerston North on Saturday, September 29. Players wishing to make the trip should communicate with the acting secretary, Mr. R. A. Godtschalk. The late Mr. J. A. Glasgow, who died in hospital on August 24. aged 71 years, has been a tower of strength to the Ngaio Chess Club for more than two decades. He served the club as hon. secretary' for one year and as hon. treasurer for 21 years, from April, 1919, until the club went into recess in 1940. He took first prize in six of the club's tourneys, and was run-ner-up on several occasions. His enterprising play assisted the club to gain honours in competitions promoted by the Wellington Chess League, of which he was honorary treasurer for 11 years He was very popular with his club-mates, by whom he will be greatly missed.
