'VICTORY TEST' MATCH
ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA LONDON, May 19. A "Victory Test" match between England and Australia, the nearest approach to a real Test that has been played for seven years, opened at Lord's today." England's team is.of peacetime strength and includes eight Test players, five of whom played in 1938 against Australia. W. R. Hammond is captaining England and A. L. Hassett, who will possibly succeed Don Bradman as Australian Test captain, leads the Australians. The attendance today was 20,000. , mj , Hammond won the toss, ana decided to bat, but the innings opened tragically, L. Hutton, who scored 364 against Bradman's team in 1938, losing his wicket for one run. However, C. Washbrook (28), J. D. Robertson (53), Hammond (29), L. E. G. Ames. (57). W. J. Edrich (45), and Stephenson (31) carried England along, and the innings closed for a total of 269. Cheetham took three wickets for 49, E. A. Williams two for 56, Ellis two for 59, K. Miller one for 11, and Price two for 24. The Australian innings opened late in the afternoon, and at stumps two wickets were down for 82, Whittington having scored 36 and Hassett being not out 27. __
