POLICY OF PRESS

MR. CURTIN'S ATTITUDE

Rec. 9 a.m,

CANBERRA, April 27,

"Newspapers have complete discretion within the law to publish what they care to publish and to suppress what they care to suppress," said the Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin, during the debate on Army equipment in the House of Representatives.

The Prime Minister had been asked to take action against a Sydney newspaper for the alleged distortion of a statement made by him during the course of the debate. He replied: "I will not tolerate any interference with newspapers -publishing or suppressing news according to their own dictates. This is an age T long tradition and practice of newspapers. I am not a bit concerned about the effect of their misrepresentation, because I know that in the long run the truth will prevail."

The editor of the paper concerned has denied the allegations of distortion.
