TRIBUTE TO U.S.A.
LANDING ON LUZON
P.A. AUCKLAND, February 5. At his Press conference today, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser referred to his visit to Luzon with General MacArthur's forces, and said the whole operation had been very good. "The Americans," he said, "make very careiul plans and then carry them through with great determination, boldness, and courage. , "The first L.S.T. craft was timed to hit the beach at 9.30 o'clock in the morning," he said. "Actually it grounded at 9.291- o'clock. Old battleships, the cruiser escort, carriers, and landing craft had taken the brunt of :L le f a Panese bombing, but none of tne damage stopped the ships carrying on with their jobs." The Admiral said that just before a Japanese bomb hit the bridge of the ship he was on he had been talking to Mr. Churchill's personal representative, General Lumsden. He had left him and walked to the other side of the bridge when the bomb fell, killing General Lumsden outright and also a member of the Admiral's personal staff He paid a high tribute to General Lumsden, whom General Mac Arthur considered the highest authority on armoured warfare.
