SHAPE OF THE END

NAZIS WILL PERSIST

Rec. 9 a.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 5. The "New York Times" says editorially: "To gain some respite from avenging justice, the Nazi leaders no dqu6t will sacrifice Germany, possibly with the thought in the back of their minds that any cause which is defended to the last assumes dignity." The New .York "World Telegram" says: '-Even if the Russians are ableto take Berlin quickly and General Eisenhower plunges through from the west, the Nazis may go on fighting from t bases in central and southern Germany. Prolonged destruction and chaos in Germany seem to be more probable than a quick, clear-cut peace for the whole country, while the Nazis survive."

LONDON, February 5. American newspapers are issuing warnings against optimistic 'beliefs of an early German collapse. Hanson Baldwin, the "New York Times" military commentator, says :'Even if Berlin falls, what remains of the German strength will probably continue to resist. There may not he any formal German surrender or clear-cut victory in Europe. The victory may come gradually, with piecemeal destruction of the German army and progressive disintegration of the Nazi resistance."
